Professor Prophet taught at the school I run on Saturday, and he dealt with two levels of thinking about politics.
First. The naively intuitive plane, on which the vast majority of people operate because they have no reason to spend time and energy on any deeper analysis. They can’t change those things anyway, and usually can’t influence them.
Second. The analytical plane, where terms are defined, theses are formulated, verified… in short, deeper systematic thinking.
For our students or readers of Daniel Kahneman, the difference between fast (superficial) and slow (analytical) thinking will certainly jump out.
But Professor Prorok also pointed out that the “narratives” that Western governments promote with such zeal are aimed exclusively at the level of the naively intuitive. This is the basis of the fight against disinformation. It is not just about pressuring people to hold certain views, but also about keeping them at a naively intuitive level of thinking. Just don’t commit such transgressions as clearly articulating alternatives, comparing scenarios, defining risks, etc. Overthinking is as counter-state as seeking Vladimir Putin’s world domination or trying to make the planet go down in flames.
