What will the end of the European Union look like? Will there be a declaration? Or will the buildings of Brussels collapse? None of these, of course. The European institutions will continue to function, but they will receive less and less attention. There will not be one specific date until which the EU will exist, and after that, no more.
So it is quite possible that that is what we are seeing these days. Germany has simply imposed border controls, France has imposed border controls, the Netherlands has imposed border controls, Poland has announced that it is temporarily no longer respecting EU law on migration… when things this spectacular are happening, how many seemingly inconspicuous issues are states starting to get their own way. Not the Czech Republic, of course, which is perfectly well behaved.
Meanwhile, more and more directives, programmes and regulations are being created, even more crazy than the existing ones. But who will comply with them?
Theoretically, it is possible that the central authorities will start acting more vigorously, that some real personality will succeed Ursula, that the empire will consolidate and tame the rebellious states. But what is the likelihood of this happening?
