On the cost of war

Oct 30, 2024

The US elections are coming, and with them perhaps Trump’s victory and perhaps the end of the war in Ukraine. The question logically arises as to what the end of that war will look like and what a victorious Russia will demand.

In this context, it is worth recalling that the Russian side has made its demands have been clear, repeated and consistent. It is wrong that it is demanding them by war. But if it had demanded them by peaceful means, any reasonable person would have to agree with them.

First. Strong guarantees that Russia will not be attacked from Ukrainian territory. Second. That ethnic Russians living in Ukraine be granted basic civil rights.

One can guess that at the moment the Russian demands will be more extensive and that those demands will be met. So let’s wait and see how much Putin is going to get in the end. Anything beyond those two demands we can include as a cost of the war. In addition to the deaths, the destruction of the country, the economic losses. and moral disruption.
