The war for subsistence and domestic production continues. Under a new EU directive, you must register every hen you keep at home. I’m not saying that there are already other plans, but the logic of the matter is that the next step is that you will not only register, but there will be various forms and reports, then the authorities will tell you exactly how to look after the hen (in a way that makes it as expensive as possible) and finally they will tax it so that the eggs will be many times more expensive than from the supermarket. How about a mandatory 500 euro egg computer for each hen?
It also follows logically that many will keep small livestock illegally, face drastic fines and try to bribe inspectors with meat or eggs.
It also follows logically that many will keep small livestock illegally, face drastic fines and try to bribe inspectors with meat or eggs. But don’t be sad. During the German occupation during the war, people were shot for keeping livestock unregistered, so compared to our great-grandparents we won’t be too bad off.
Some European governments are trying to negotiate an exemption, so maybe they’ll get it to take effect here a year or so later. Hooray.
