A few days ago, graphics of the Day Against Violence Against Men appeared on social media. Various kind-faced women in the graphics promise to protect men from violence. Wrong! If you feel that men are too often victims of violence, then motivate them to start exercising, to stop feeling sorry for themselves and to get rid of the victim mentality. That’s what men and boys need. Not pity or regret or protectiveness.

It would be something else if someone wanted to do something about the de facto inequality before the law that leads to many men being afraid to enter into marriage (and more recently, less committed relationships) because they believe that if they get in trouble, they will be denied justice. That they can be branded as rapists, evicted from their homes, harassed, forced to pay ruinous child support without any evidence, and that if a judgment is made in their favour, it will be ignored anyway. I cannot judge in how many cases that feeling is entirely justified, but the very fact that it exists and that it is spreading en masse is damaging to relationships and damaging to society.
And then of course there are the horrific issues around allegations of sexual harassment or rape, where many men are denied their right to due process. This is where we need to work! Fix the justice system! Men don’t need any more protection.
