Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this year’s US presidential election is not talked about. Namely, the ease with which democracy disappeared from the Democratic Party. Readers will know that each of the major parties has always chosen its president in a vote in which millions of party activists and members participated. For this year’s election, Joe Biden was so chosen. There is an alternative mechanism for exceptional situations – the convention delegates vote.
This was the case until recently. And it isn’t anymore. A group of influential people got together, simply overruled the decisions of millions of party activists, and decided instead. They set up an electronic vote for convention delegates to choose between Harris and Harris. And if they weren’t satisfied with that, Harris. Which candidate would get the most votes?
Nobody talks about it, nobody addresses it, nobody cares. The right of powerful people behind the scenes to cancel elections is taken for granted.
Remember eight years ago they had to plot elaborately to get rid of Sanders? How much simpler things are today.
And now we can speculate when the last complication – the presidential election – will be removed.
