There is talk of two places where there is war and it would be better not to go to war. But the problem is that in each of those places, peace would be based on completely different conditions.

The offer to Ukraine is: Abandon the war. You may lose some territory, you may have to make some diplomatic compromise. It may be disadvantageous and humiliating. But still better than being driven into minefields against Russian cannons. And you’ll go back to your normal life.

The offers to Israel sound different. Stop fighting and accept being killed, tortured, burned alive. Maybe sold into slavery. In Israel, in Europe and everywhere else you go. It’s not about honor. It’s about bare lives.

From Hamas, to Arab governments (including moderate ones), to European governments, to even Scott Ritter, no one has any other offer for them. No one is proposing: Stop the war and we will tame Hamas. No one is suggesting: Stop the war and we will negotiate that Iran and Qatar will put the squeeze on Hamas. No one is suggesting: Stop the war and we will remove from primary schools the teaching that killing Jews is the highest virtue.

We can rage and we can hold the Israelis to be war criminals because they won’t be cut down without resistance. But we cannot expect them to agree to a peace that includes gas chambers.
