Women and children are being evacuated from Donetsk, and the reader in the Czech Republic realises how much we in the West have become so rude. A generation ago, it was a given even in our country that when the going got tough, the men stayed while the women and children (or a few old people) scrambled for safety. But today it’s different. The mainstream media explains that there are “pro-Russian” women and children, and it’s settled. They can be shot at. They can be burned. Ambassadors and heads of NGOs will be evacuated if there is a threat. But try to imagine, for example, a situation where the encirclement is retracting, the last few places to move out are left, and the director of a non-profit with a noble title is left in a death zone because he made room for a 20-year-old village girl with a small child. This belongs in the world as it was 50+ years ago.

Maybe a rank-and-file soldier would do it, maybe a carpenter or a plumber would do it, but certainly not a member of the current power elite. I mean, it wasn’t obvious even in the old days, but it was an act highly admired. In today’s climate, the lives of people whom propaganda declares “pro-Russian” have lost any value. The life of a cute squirrel, a paedophile transvestite or a jihadist who murders dozens of British children in a few months has a price. Mostly children from ordinary working class “xenophobic” families.
Russians are old-fashioned.
